Hello Winslow Families,
What a wonderful week we’ve had at Winslow! Everyone who needed their picture retaken brought their best smiles for make-up day. Mrs. Weiner, Mrs. Webb, Mrs. LaMartina, and Mrs. Monroe shared information about our new ELA program, CKLA, with families at our November PTO meeting. The Winslow Wiggle was an exciting and fun finish to the week!
Thank you to our Winslow community! The Winslow Wiggle raised almost $25,000–at the time of this writing, we were only a few hundred dollars away! This was an amazing effort on the part of our community, and we truly appreciate your support of our school and the many things that PTO organizes and sponsors throughout the year!
News for the Week Ahead
Safety Reminder for School
Please do not hold the doors to enter school open for others. Each family needs to buzz and request entry individually.
Winslow PTO on Remind
The PTO is pleased to share that you can find them on Remind! To sign up, please visit: https://www.remind.com/join/
Culture Fair
The Winslow Culture Fair is coming up on November 19! This event will be held in the Winslow cafeteria from 6:30-7:30 PM. Share about the country your family comes from! Talk about customs, holidays, wear traditional clothing, and more! Your family can share about your country or come to learn about other cultures. Cultural snacks will be provided, no need to bring food from home.
We are looking for families to share cultural activities with the Winslow community. If interested, please complete this Google Form by Thursday, November 13.
We look forward to celebrating with you!
Digital Equity Survey/SchoolTool Access
Since 2021, the New York State Education Department has required districts to gather information regarding home access to the Internet, and what devices students use. This annual Digital Equity Survey will be accessible through SchoolTool beginning Thursday, November 20.
When you log in to SchoolTool after that date, you will be prompted to respond to some brief questions found in each student's account. You won’t be able to access your student’s information, including report cards, until this is completed.
If more than one survey is available for your child, please review the version in red. This will only take a few minutes and can be done via the app or by logging on to the SchoolTool website. We created a document to walk you through the process if you are using the website instead of the app.
If you completed the survey last year, please review your responses to verify the information is still accurate. If you have not already completed the survey, you will be prompted to do so when you log in. Please update or complete the survey no later than Friday, December 12.
Please note: If you are using the SchoolTool mobile app, you may see multiple surveys for each student. The required survey will be in red text.
We have also created a short video to assist you with a few of your selections while taking the survey. We appreciate your time and thank you for helping us to fulfill this state requirement.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
Parent-teacher conferences are a vital part of our home-school partnership. We look forward to collaborating with you to support the learning of your child! Our parent-teacher conferences will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday, November 24, and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, November 25. If you have not yet scheduled a conference, it is not too late! Please reach out to your child’s teacher or the Winslow office at 359-5090 to arrange a convenient time. Both in-person and virtual meetings are available.
Local Resources for Families
With the holiday season approaching and the potential for limited federal resources being made available to assist local families, we want to remind our community of several local avenues of support. Students can always take advantage of the free breakfast and lunch options on school days. (We recommend submitting the annual free and reduced lunch forms so R-H can continue to provide an array of services to students and families.) In addition, families can utilize the R-H Kicking Hunger School Food Pantry and additional local food resources. You also may visit this page on our website for a variety of resources available to families.

Hello Winslow Families,
Tomorrow, November 5, is picture make-up day! If your child missed having his or her picture taken, or needs another chance to bring her or his best smile, Clix will be at Winslow tomorrow morning to do this!

Here is the November Letter Day Calendar.

Finally, we were informed by the Winslow PTO that we are making headway toward our fundraising goal of $25,000! We have raised $14,756 with 40% of our students registered at mybooster.com! The pre-kindergarten classes earned a hat day for tomorrow, Wednesday, November 5!

Hello Winslow Families,
Huge thanks to all the families who donated non-perishable foods and personal care items as part of our annual Make-A-Difference Day food drive! Your generosity was amazing, inspiring, and timely.
Likewise, halfway through the Winslow Wiggle fundraiser, we have raised a little more than half of the $25,000 goal set by the Winslow PTO! There is still another week to go, before we hold our “Wiggle” Friday, November 5. During special areas on November 5, students will spend the first 30 minutes dancing (wiggling) and having fun. This fundraiser makes events like our Back-to-School Social, Fun Day, Movie Night, Family Dance, and so many others possible! Funds have also been used to defray some yearbook costs and to purchase the beautiful new play structure on the upper playground. We appreciate your support for our school!
Speaking of the upper playground, the school district has also purchased a new piece of playground equipment for Winslow! Installation of the new piece began this week.
News for the Week Ahead
The start-of-day for primary schools, including Winslow, changed this year. Student arrival is from 7:35 to 7:45 a.m. Students are considered late at 7:45 a.m. Please be aware that students must be walked in and signed into school once our 7:45 a.m. bell rings. Instruction and some student services begin at 7:50 a.m. When students arrive late, they are missing important school time. Thank you for making sure your child arrives at school on time.
Hello Winslow Families,
This week we welcomed Yoshi the axolotl back to Winslow! A huge thank you to Mrs. Harney for sharing this adorable little guy with us. Anyone visiting the library can take a peek at Yoshi, who seems happy to be back at school again!

Our third graders enjoyed a presentation from the Seneca Park Zoo, complete with some reptiles and amphibians they got to see close up!

First graders wrapped up their studies of the human body, and Mrs. Landschoot and Mrs. Winters brought skeletons to life!

What a fun week!
News for the Week Ahead:
Safety Reminders
This week was National School Bus Safety Week. Did you know that passing a stopped school bus with its lights and stop sign out is both dangerous and illegal? It is estimated that more than 50,000 motorists illegally pass stopped buses each day across New York state. Please be alert to the buses in our community and exercise caution.
Along those lines, we have been hearing increased concern regarding the way motorists are driving in our lot and in the area around our school. Please obey directional arrows, and do not “cut through” the aisles in the parking lot. Please drive slowly, remembering that there are little people who you may not see until they step out near the car. Here’s what you can do to keep our students and pedestrians safe:
- Be Alert During Key Times: Stay extra vigilant during arrival and dismissal.
- Follow Speed Limits: Follow school zone speed limits - slowing down saves lives.
- Yield to Pedestrians: Always stop for pedestrians in crosswalks and obey crossing guards.
- Avoid Distractions: Put away your phone and focus on the road, especially near schools.
Please be sure to pay close attention in and around our parking lot, bus loop, and throughout the areas around our schools.
No Costumes in School on Halloween, October 31: A gentle reminder for all families that we do not have students wear costumes during the school day on Halloween. The opportunity to wear a costume was last Friday, during Trunk-or-Treat.
Make a Difference Day
The town of Henrietta and the Rush-Henrietta Central School District are joining together once again for “Make A Difference Day,” the annual National Day of Caring. All Rush-Henrietta schools will be accepting donations of non-perishable food products and personal care items during the week of October 27-October 31. This year’s Day of Caring will be held on Saturday, November 1, at the R-H Senior High School.
We will be accepting donations all week! What a great way to join together to make a difference for our community!

Hello Winslow Families,
Wow! We had a wonderful Trunk-or-Treat on Friday night, with more than 500 members of our Winslow community in attendance! It was great to see the creative costumes, families enjoying being together, and all the fun we have as a school community. Thank you to all the people who donated candy, to everyone who decorated their trunks, and to the Winslow PTO for holding this event!
SEL Spotlight
We are off to a great start this school year as we focus on “Spotting Our Royal Comets” throughout Winslow!
In September, our school reviewed all of the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) traits we will be focusing on throughout the year. We know when our students work on being Ready-to-Learn, Caring, Trustworthy, Responsible, and Respectful, it creates a safe and happy learning environment for everyone. As students practice these traits, they become more self-aware, more socially aware of others, and more connected in their classrooms.
This month, we are focusing on Self-Management and Trustworthiness. Self-management means being in control of our emotions—even when those feelings feel big! Students are learning strategies like Stop, Think, Act or taking a deep breath to calm down. They are becoming more aware of their emotions, learning to label them, and finding healthy ways to manage their feelings.
At the same time, we’re working on what it means to be Trustworthy—behaving the Winslow Way! This includes choosing expected behaviors even when no one is watching, telling the truth, asking before borrowing something, and thinking before we speak to make sure we share honest information.
We also sent home October’s “Comet SPOTTED Me Being a Royal Comet!” half sheet, which highlights some skills families can practice together at home.
Hopefully, your child has also had the chance to bring home our first Book of the Month, A Little Spot of Kindness. Mrs. Tomalty and Mr. Moore loved visiting classrooms to read this story—it’s a favorite among students! When your child brings the book home, please be sure to return it promptly so every student has the chance to enjoy it with their family.
News for the Week Ahead
This week we kick off our district-wide food drive to benefit the RHAFT and support hungry families in our area as part of the Rush-Henrietta School District “Make a Difference Day 2025.” Please see the flyer below to find out how you can help “make a difference!” Donations will be collected at Winslow until October 31.

Hello Winslow Families,
We have had a busy week at Winslow, and are looking forward to the long weekend ahead. We hope your weekend is filled with fun and time with these great kiddos!
This week we had our first PTO meeting of the year! The PTO is up to some great things, as always–pulling together our upcoming Trunk-or-Treat for example - and they need your help and support! Would you like to help with the yearbook, an upcoming event, or to represent the Winslow community on a district committee? Please reach out to wPTOWinslow@gmail.com!
Important News for the Week Ahead
This week at Winslow, the PTO is hosting Trunk-or-Treat from 6:30-8 on Friday evening (10/17) in the bus loop. With more than 20 cars registered, we know it will be a spooktacular time! Right now, UPK and K are leading the candy donations for Trunk-or-Treat, but there is still time for another grade to overtake them!
It has long been our custom not to wear costumes at school during the day, so Trunk-or-Treat provides an excellent opportunity for everyone to admire everyone else’s costumes and have some seasonal fun together, without the danger of leaving behind important costume pieces or disrupting important learning during the day.
DESSA
More than two decades of research helps us understand the important role that social-emotional skills play in shaping each student's success both now and in the future. Making good decisions, demonstrating self-control, persisting at challenging tasks, and working well as a member of a group are examples of skills necessary for children to be successful well into adulthood.
Rush-Henrietta is committed to prioritizing mental health and supporting our strategic plan goal to increase the social-emotional competence of our students. For the second year, R-H will be using a strength-based universal screening tool called DESSA. It is our goal to have 80 percent of students take part in this benchmarking twice each school year - once in the fall and spring. At the K-6 level, teachers will complete administration of this screener for their entire class. Building teams will review the data and use it to help shape the support we provide to students. You can opt-out your child by emailing me before Friday, October 17.

Hello Winslow Families,
This week at Winslow, we held a number of drills to increase our readiness in case of an emergency here at school. We are so proud of how seriously students and staff alike took practicing these safety drills!

We recognized a number of “spotlight students” for their excellent behavior and choices.

Word Wednesdays started up once again! All students are invited to wear “word shirts” on Wednesdays through the rest of the year to celebrate as we build academic vocabularies!

Hello Winslow Families,
We are continuing to enjoy some beautiful fall weather at Winslow! We are enjoying getting out to the playground for recess, and getting outside for physical education. Colder mornings and warmer afternoons lead to lots of jackets and sweaters being left behind. Could you please check to make sure your child’s name is on her/his outerwear? This makes it easier to reunite lost items with their owners. If an item has already been mislaid, lost items can be found on the stage steps!
Important News for the Week Ahead:
- Picture Day is Thursday, September 25! Please be on the lookout for picture day materials in backpacks and folders tomorrow (Monday, 9/21). Remind your Royal Comet to bring her/ his best smile!
- Open House for Grades 1-3 is on Thursday, September 25! Please join us between 6:30 and 8 PM for an informal opportunity to meet the teacher and visit Winslow. Please note that most special area teachers will not be in attendance for this event. Kindergarten held their open house in August.

Hello Winslow Families,
We had another great week at Winslow! We hosted our first SEL assembly of the year. We are focused on being ready to learn as we start this new school year off.

We also had our first evacuation drill of the year. Our kids did a great job! We will conduct several more evacuation drills this fall!
Important News for the Week Ahead:
- Please be sure to complete the Winslow Dismissal Form by noon so we can make sure your child ends the day with a clear plan for the end of his or her school day.
- Please drive carefully in and around the school grounds. We have several walkers and bike riders on our campus!
- We have begun to make automated calls from our Health Office whenever a child is absent from school. Please continue to report student absences on the Winslow Attendance line at 359-5081.
Late Arrival Information
Students that arrive to school at 7:45 a.m. or after are considered late. Doors close promptly at 7:45 a.m., so students arriving after that time must gain entrance through the main door only. Parents must walk their student to the main entrance to sign them into school; students will be marked as a late arrival. To avoid tardiness, please send your student via bus or parent drop-off between 7:35 and 7:45 a.m. If you are dropping off your child, please stay in your car and have them sit on the passenger side. This will keep drop-off moving smoothly.

Our Winslow Way School Theme: “Spot Us Being Royal Comets!”
This year, we continue to focus on building Royal Comet pride—both individually and as a school community. Our goal is to spot students making positive choices and doing their best every day. Some students may even find themselves “in the Spotlight” for their outstanding choices!
Alongside academics like math, reading, and writing, our district is dedicated to helping students grow their social skills and character. Our Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) program follows the evidence-based CASEL framework (What Is the CASEL Framework), which builds skills in:
- Self-Awareness & Social Awareness
- Relationship Skills
- Self-Management
- Responsible Decision-Making
In addition to these competencies, we continue to highlight the importance of being:
- Ready-to-Learn
- Caring
- Trustworthy
- Responsible
- Respectful
Each month, we will spotlight different competencies and traits to help every student be their very best.
To support this important work at home, we provide SEL Family Monthly Sheets and a Book of the Month. This year, we will use the Little Spot of Feelings book series to help students connect these traits to their daily lives. Each child will have a turn bringing the class Book of the Month home to share with their family. Please enjoy reading it together and then return it so other students may have a turn.
We encourage families to reinforce these SEL skills at home, as your support makes a huge impact on your child’s success. Thank you for all you do to help us nurture caring, capable, and confident Royal Comets!

Hello Winslow Families,
We are so excited to get the 2025-2026 school year started with our kids and our families! It was a pleasure to see so many families on Tuesday and Wednesday, and we can feel the school coming back to life after its summer off!
Important news for the week ahead:
School starts Tuesday, September 2! If you are dropping your K-3 child off, please be sure your student is here by 7:45 a.m. Breakfast and lunch are free for students once again this year! Our goal is to have our buses rolling by 2 p.m. Tuesday, but we know there may be delays as Winslow and the drivers make sure each child is on the correct bus.
Remember you can check where your child is on their route using StopFinder! If you have not signed up, check your email for a message that was recently sent from StopFinder. StopFinder provides real-time access to your child’s transportation schedule. You can share access with trusted family members, receive notifications when the bus departs school, and much more.
Your child will have a nametag added to his or her backpack to assist bus drivers with taking attendance as students board the buses. This speeds up the process, helps drivers to learn names, and supports substitute drivers. Please leave these tags on backpacks all year!
Please check backpacks and take home folders carefully this week for important papers that may come home with your child. Please be sure you return the “blue card” promptly, as that helps us to be in contact with you in the event of emergencies.
On Thursday, September 4, we will host an assembly for K-3 students. Please have your child wear green! The Winslow PTO is sponsoring its annual Welcome Back Picnic from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, September 5. All families are welcomed and invited to attend–we hope to see you there!
Important Dates:
September 2 Classes Begin
September 4 School Assembly; wear green
September 5 PTO Welcome Back Social 6 to 7:30 p.m.
September 25 School Pictures
September 25 Grade 1-3 Open House 6:30 to 8 p.m.
